On our way to Martini Tower |
There is something so humbling about seeing structures and cities which have been here since before Christopher Columbus even discovered the West Indies. Martini tower has been built three different times. The first tower collapsed and the second one was destroyed by lightning. In 1469, the current tower was built, but it actually burned down again! There was only 69 meters left standing. In 1627 the tower was finally built back to its full height of 97 meters. (318 feet for my American friends!)
It really was amazing to go inside and climb the small spiral staircase as it twisted and turned to the top.
At one of the stopping points on the way up the tower there was a mock bell organ which is a replica of what he Stadsbelaardier (City Carillonneur) plays when he rings the bells in the tower.
The video below is a bit dark because of the lack of light inside the tower, but you can kind of make out the kids trying to pull the rope.:)
And my own pathetic attempt to ring the bell...epic FAIL!!!!
I just have to say the bells we saw were massive!
It is hard to believe that there has been someone here to play the bells since 1525!
View from the first balcony...
Climbing down was a bit easier on the leg muscles but a lot harder to control vertigo!
God must have been looking down on us today because I think I witnessed a true miracle...Elizabeth DID NOT COMPLAIN THE WHOLE WAY UP OR DOWN THE 323 STEPS!!!! ALLELUIA!!!
Thanks for joining me for a little bit of our adventure!
Doei!!
